This week in Year 5, children have been busy developing their biography-writing skills and exploring the lives of inspiring individuals as well as writing a biography all about them! They’ve learned how to structure a biography, gather key facts and write engaging paragraphs that bring a person’s story to life.

Alongside their English work, the class has also been tackling fractions in Maths—comparing, ordering, and finding equivalent fractions, as well as practising how to add and subtract them.

In History, Year 5 have been learning about evacuees from World War II, exploring what life was like for children who had to leave their homes and families for safety. They have been discussing the emotions evacuees might have felt, examining real-life accounts and imagining the challenges of adapting to life in the countryside. In Art, the class has also been studying the work of the sculptor Constantin Brancusi, learning about his distinctive style and how he used simple, elegant shapes to express powerful ideas. Pupils have enjoyed experimenting with their own designs inspired by Brancusi’s modern, abstract approach.

Swimming

Year 5 have two weeks left of swimming; their last session will be on Friday 28th November. They have been thoroughly enjoying their swimming sessions and with only two weeks left, Oak class are making the most of every opportunity to build confidence and improve their skills in the water. The children have shown great progress and enthusiasm throughout the programme. Once swimming finishes, Year 5’s PE lessons will continue as normal on Fridays, giving pupils plenty of chances to stay active, develop teamwork and enjoy a range of sports and activities.

Next Week

Children will be food tasting in D&T as part of their new topic. Please let us know if there are any new allergies or food intolerances we should be made aware of before Wednesday 19th November.
