Crowmoor Teacher

What a lovely first week back after half term. As well as catching up with everyone's news we also started our new topic of 'Growth'

and the children shared their thoughts about things that grow including trees, plants, fruit, vegetables, animals and themselves! We have also been talking about the changes they think they will see in the weather and our environment as Spring approaches.

In Drawing Club we read the traditional story 'The Ugly Duckling' and the children drew and wrote about the characters, setting and then what else they thought could come out of an egg and who else could be a friend to the 'duckling' and why.

In phonics we have been recapping the digraphs and trigraphs from last term and have been learning to read longer words by 'chunking' - reading the first syllable, then the second before putting them together e.g. rock/et, bigg/er, farm/yard, bed/room. We have also been revisiting our Phase 2 and 3 tricky words. We will continue to revisit these over the next few weeks before moving on to the next stage to ensure the children are confident recognising Phase 3 sounds in words and blending them to read words.

In Maths this week we have been finding, representing and comparing numbers 9 and 10. As part of this they have been looking at different representations of the numbers and talking about what they can see e.g. I see 5 here and 4 there. There are 9 altogether or I can see 6 here and 4 there, that's 10 altogether etc.

The 1-minute maths app | White Rose Education is great for helping the children practice subitising and build up their knowledge of number facts and it is completely free if they want to practice at home.

PE continues to be on a Friday. Please ensure children wear their PE kits and suitable footwear on that day. Thank you!

Next week we have a very busy and exciting week with Shrove Tuesday (Pancake day!) on Tuesday and World Book Day on Thursday. I am really looking forward to seeing the children all dressed up as their favourite character and hearing about their favourite books. We are going to be fully immersing ourselves in the world of books and story telling all day, so it would be great if the children can bring their favourite story book with them to share with the class. Thank you.

Have a lovely weekend.

Miss Jones, Mrs Kenny and Miss Mosdell.
