What a busy and exciting week it has been in Year 5! The children have shown fantastic curiosity, creativity and resilience across all of their subjects.
🍽️ Food Tasting – Seasonal Foods
As part of our learning, Year 5 took part in a seasonal food tasting session. We talked about what it means to eat seasonally. The children had the opportunity to taste a range of simple, seasonal foods and discuss their opinions on the taste, texture and smell!
📚 History – WW2
This week, we continued our work on rationing during World War II. The children explored why rationing was introduced and how it affected everyday life. They were particularly fascinated by the limited food choices families had and enjoyed discussing what meals they would (or wouldn’t!) have liked to try. Some classes even designed their own rationed menus!
🔬 Science – Investigating Air Resistance
In Science, Year 5 have been experimenting with air resistance. We tested different shapes and sizes of parachutes to see how they fall. The children made predictions, carried out fair tests and recorded their results carefully. There was lots of excitement as they compared which parachute stayed in the air the longest and why!
✏️ English – Writing Our Own Biographies
Our English lessons have focused on writing biographies—and the children have been the stars of their own stories! They planned and wrote about their early life, achievements, hobbies and hopes for the future. It has been wonderful to see their confidence grow as they reflected on their personal journeys.
➗ Maths – Fractions, Fractions, Fractions!
In Maths, we’ve continued developing our understanding of fractions. The children have been comparing and ordering fractions, finding equivalent fractions and practising how to convert between improper fractions and mixed numbers. Their fluency and problem-solving skills are really coming along.
⭐ A Great Week of Learning
We are very proud of how hard Year 5 have worked and how enthusiastic they have been across all subjects. Keep up the brilliant effort!
Have a lovely week,
The Year 5 Team
