Here's what Year 5 have been up to this week!

Science – Investigating Friction

ree

In Science, the children have been exploring the forces that affect movement, with a particular focus on friction. They carried out practical investigations to test how different surfaces impact the speed and movement of objects. The class showed excellent teamwork, careful measuring, and lots of curiosity as they compared their results and discussed why friction is such an important force in our everyday lives.

Art – Paper Mache Birds Inspired by Richard Sweeney

ree

Our Art lessons have taken inspiration from sculptor Richard Sweeney, whose work explores form, paper, and structure. Building on his ideas, the children have begun creating their very own paper mache birds. They have worked thoughtfully to shape their designs, and the models are already looking fantastic. We’re looking forward to adding paint and detail next week!

English – Wonderful Winter Poetry

This week in English, the children have written some truly fantastic winter poetry. They experimented with descriptive language, imagery, and poetic devices to bring the sights and sounds of the season to life. We were very impressed by their creativity and the atmosphere they managed to capture in their writing.

Maths – Consolidating Key Skills

In Maths, the children have been consolidating their understanding of addition and subtraction multi-step problems, working carefully to select the most efficient strategies and explain each stage of their thinking. They have also been tackling missing number problems, using their knowledge of inverse operations to check their answers and deepen their reasoning skills. We’ve been impressed by their determination and growing confidence.

Seasonal Celebrations

This week, Year 5 also enjoyed watching the Beech Class nativity and getting a sneak peek at the carol service practice. It was a lovely opportunity for the children to get into the festive spirit.

Have a lovely weekend,

The Year 5 Team!
