Beech Newsletter 23.5.25

What a super week we have had this week reading 'Somebody Swallowed Stanley' learning all about recycling and how we can all play our part in looking after the environment. The children have learnt about different materials that can be recycled or reused and we have talked about ways we can reduce our use of plastics, and ensure our rubbish does not end up in our seas and oceans.

They have sorted rubbish into cardboard, paper, metal, plastic and general rubbish, created posters to encourage others to recycle and be responsible with their rubbish, used found resources to create sea creatures and explored floating and sinking by adding rubbish to the water tray to see what happens to it.

We talked about having picnics at the beach and taking our rubbish away with us. The children then designed and made their own healthy sandwiches, choosing a base, spread, protein filling and salad items. They were very excited to take them home and told me they really enjoyed eating them!

In Phonics we are reading longer words, which the children are learning to 'chunk' and this week they have been reading words ending in -ing -ed and -est. They have also learnt the last of the tricky words for Phase 4 - 'out' and 'today'. These have been added to their tricky word bags so they should now have a copy of all the tricky words we have learnt so far (Phase 2-4) to practice at home. The most recent ones are the green Phase 4 ones but it's really important they continue to revisit the Phase 3 (blue) ones regularly so they remain secure with those too.

In Maths we have been learning about sharing and grouping, learning the importance of sharing equally and how to see/make equal groups within a larger group. The children have found the grouping part a little tricky, recognising that they have to count the groups, rather than all the objects, but we will continue to work on this after half term.

Have a lovely break, hopefully the weather will be kind!
